4.5kW PV System in Oakham with Battery Storage

What’s the story?

This system was set up on Roy’s property in Oakham in September 2023. This provides a great example of how you can utilise your system to not only reduce your bills, but provide some extra income by selling unused solar energy back to the grid.

Key components of this system:

  • 16 Longi solar panels (405W)
  • GivEnergy 3.6kW hybrid inverter
  • 9.5kWh GivEnergy battery storage system

It took us a total of 1 and a half days to install this system. We thoroughly enjoyed this project, Roy was a fantastic host keeping us topped up with tea throughout our work.

Lets talk numbers…

Here is a screenshot of Roy’s Energy flow taken from his GivEnergy report. Roy generated 3960kWh of electricity and this electricity was spent in three ways.

  1. 934kWh was used straight from the solar to power the electricity load in the house.
  2. 1242kWh was stored in his battery to be used at night when the sun isn’t shining.
  3. 1784kWh was sold to the electricity grid. The solar panels essentially produced more than Roy used, so he sold his excess energy back to the electricity grid.

Now let’s look at Roy’s energy consumption rather generation. Below is a screenshot of his GivEnergy report.

Based on report, between September 2023 and July 2024, Roy consumed 2254kWh of electricity but generated 3960kWh. Looking at the data in the pie chart only 320kWh of electricity was supplied from the grid, or 15%, meaning that a whopping 85% of Roy’s electricity consumption came from his solar and battery system. With an estimated electricity tariff of 28p / kWh, this means that Would’ve spent £630 during this period on electricity (£0.28 x 2254kWh), however he ended up spending only £90 on his electricity consumption for the whole period. (£0.28 x 321kWh).  That’s a total saving of £540.

What about his export?

On top of his initial savings, Roy also exported 1784kWh of electricity back to the electricity grid. He sold this electricity for 15p per kWh, which works out at £268 for the period. So let’s add this all together.

Overall Roy’s savings and benefits are estimated to be around £808 for September 2023 to July 2024

The screenshot above showing the Energy flow graph is a summary of how electricity was used and sold over the period.

This was all arranged from start to finish in about 2 months and expertly managed by Will and his team. All work was done neatly and cleanly (despite the weather). The team are a great bunch of lads and a pleasure to deal with. From our experience I would have no hesitation in recommending this company.
